Oil & Gas OSI PI to Canary Conversion
Project Drive
A large oil and natural gas company had been using OSI PI requiring extensive overhead for support. They wanted to be able to better manage and develop the system to meet their needs, including allowing integrator support to get away from a single source of development resources. After a market analysis it was determined Canary Labs Historian was the best solution for this project.
Solution
Corso Systems has experience converting process historians to and from OSI PI, and had been working with Canary Labs on some tools to streamline this process. This opportunity was a perfect testbed for the technology, requiring the conversion and validation of 7+ years of data for 1.5+ million tags, and conversion of PI Vision screens used as operator dashboards to Canary Labs Axiom platform.
Corso Systems worked with Canary Labs to build and optimize the data conversion tool from OSI PI to Canary Labs, pulling a day of data out of OSI PI at a time, parsing, cleaning, and importing the data using Canary’s API, then validating the data against OSI PI once it had been imported.
Corso provided ongoing, on-site support during the conversion and validation process, managing the team tasked with the project including subject matter experts on the process side. This lead to a successful project roll-out, with full data conversion being handled before the project deadline.
Benefits
Overall cost of ownership of the system, including annual support was reduced by an order of magnitude
45%+ reduction in storage requirements for Canary Historian data
Overall storage and hardware requirements for the system (servers, memory, database sizes, etc.) were reduced.
Canary is a more “open” platform, able to be supported by multiple integrators instead of tying support to one vendor
System is fully integrated with Ignition, providing a full SCADA solution including all historical data in the same interface as process controls
