Oil & Gas Power Pack

Corso Systems has helped many Oil & Gas companies standardize, optimize, and automate their wells, pumping, and refining operations. We have helped large scale well operations collecting mountains of data, refineries producing renewable fuels, and smaller hydrotreating operations.

Regardless of what you produce, we believe transparency, technology (including automation), and training are the best tools to take your operations to the next level.

Because overall equipment runtime is critically important to most oil & gas companies, they can be hesitant to adopt new technology. Our approach will not break what’s already working. We implement new technology and only cut over after ensuring it is successful. This reduces downtime, and help build trust in the tools our team will build for you. You’ll know that you’re making the right decision to modern your toolset.

What is the Corso Systems Oil & Gas Power Pack?

In our experience, oil & gas companies can get the most bang for their buck in five areas. Each of these areas focuses on maintaining and improving quality, customer satisfaction, and enhancing overall peace of mind for your company.

Because our goal is to get you up and running quickly while building momentum for the future, we call our jolt of technology the Oil & Gas Power Pack. It focuses on these 5 areas, with plenty of room to expand as your needs grow:

If you’ve already updated some or all of these areas, great! But, if you need help implementing or upgrading any of them, you’ve come to the right place. We can get you up and running quickly in any or all of these areas, giving you the tools to run your processes at their maximum potential!

In this post, we’ll explain each aspect of the Oil & Gas Power Pack. It is built with industry leading hardware and software that anyone familiar with automation can maintain. You will also have full access to the code included with the deployment—and of course you own all of your data and information. We will handle the hard work for you.

Remote Data Collection

Remote Data Collection - a small remote oil well at sunset

For companies with large scale well operations and/or pipelines, remote data collection is a critical piece of infrastructure. While you can build a central control room in walking distance to the entire process in a factory, a large scale well operation can have hundreds of wells (or more) distributed across a large geographic area. It is impossible to staff each of these wells with hands-on operators.

This is the perfect application for remote data collection, specifically MQTT. In fact, MQTT was specifically developed to support this type of application, and has been gaining a lot of steam since it became a top-tier technology in the Ignition SCADA ecosystem.

Corso Systems has helped many companies implement MQTT data collection across their operations. Compared to standard industrial protocols, MQTT reduces the overall bandwidth required for sending large amounts of data, it’s more stable and fault tolerant, and provides a great deal of security for all of your data.

We can MQTT on a rolling basis, and it cand be pushed out to a few sites while we dial in the details. Once you see the benefits, we can begin a larger scale rollout. It can also integrate with any of your other process equipment or pipeline sensors—and can even be part of building a Unified Namespace (UNS) across your entire company. A UNS will provide a greater detailed context about your current operational state anytime you need it.

Historical Data Optimization

With large scale well operations there is a lot of data to track. Most of it is critical for understanding your operation and the ongoing operation of your equipment. You’ll also usually need to store this data for a long time.

Commonly, this data tracking and management happens with OSI PI system which can become a costly burden in raw license costs, as well as bloated storage and bandwidth requirements.

As part of our Oil & Gas Power Pack, we have helped many companies migrate from these legacy process historian products to modern tools like Ignition and Canary Labs Historian. These modern tools have a smaller footprint for data storage requirements, lower license costs for a very stable system, and allow you to push even more data through the same pipes you are already using.

Ignition and Canary Labs Historian also directly integrate with MQTT, giving you the peace of mind your data is coming to you through a more robust system which will also be easier to manage in the long run.

We also help companies migrate to modern historians with no loss in historical data. We export it from the old system, validate data quality and consistency, then import the good data into the new historian.

During this process we can also manage any changes to your naming conventions, to give you consistency across all of your data as you modernize your system.

Mobile Operations Management

Just as with remote data collection, managing your equipment remotely is a powerful capability for your operators. With Ignition’s Perspective Module, we can build mobile friendly and responsive SCADA screens for your operators to monitor, control, and troubleshoot your systems from anywhere

By alerting operators of any alarms in real-time, they’ll be able to respond faster with quick access to the relevant screens they need. The Perspective Module can also provide a map-based view of your system integrated with location tracking. Operators can quickly access a view of nearby sites in the field, with easy access to production data on all of the equipment at each site.

Mobile access to your system also helps collaboration, communication, and overall clarity for your team. Everyone involved in a decision can observe the same screen from anywhere—without having to go to a control room, log into the right system from their desk, or drive to a remote site.

These screens can also mimic your control room screens reducing development time and training requirements for your team.

Production Dashboards, Trends, and Data Analysis

Even if you are storing a gargantuan amount of data, it’s not useful if you can’t access and analyze it.

With Ignition’s tools for trending and dashboard development, we can implement simple dashboards to convey complex information to your team. These can integrate with the mobile management applications for on-the-go updates, and can be displayed in larger formats on TVs in your offices or other facilities.

We can also help you select and implement the right tools for you needs if you wish to implement machine learning (ML), AI, or more advanced analysis tools. Typically, these will operate outside of Ignition on cloud-based tools like Amazon Web Services or Azure integrated with your MQTT data streams. This way, you have all of the power you could ever need for managing data at your fingertips.

It is also possible to train on-prem versions of machine learning algorithms to keep your data even more secure, and you can always use a mix of on-prem and cloud to get exactly the solutions you need.

SCADA and Overall Technology Infrastructure Management

When managing large scale operations with multiple sites, devices, and edge nodes, you need a convenient way to manage deploying changes to your system. With Ignition’s built-in tools (and other tools we’ve developed to support version control and automated deployment strategies) we can implement a remote infrastructure management solution as part of our Oil & Gas Power Pack.

This can apply to your SCADA Screens, Mobile Apps, and other software solutions, as well as any PLCs in your organization. This infrastructure management system also has the capability for audit logging to manage and track who made changes, to what, and when they were made.
