Ignition Explained Mobile & Perspective Modules

Welcome to Ignition Explained. We’re reviewing the Ignition Modules one by one, talking about what you get with each of them—and how Corso Systems uses them to build a project. If you missed the first post and video about Vision Module, then check it out here. Want to see more? Check out the rest of the series.

Two Distinct Modules

We should start out by mentioning that the Mobile module for Vision has been discontinued in Ignition 8.1. The Perspective Module first launched as part of Ignition 8.0. The Mobile Module took what you were using on Ignition Vision screens and allowed it to run on a mobile device. For the purposes of this post, a mobile device will be defined as anything that doesn't run Java on it. There are some items, such as scaling that need to be accounted for as part of this process. In contrast, Perspective is a game changer. Perspective can run on any browser that is HTML5 compliant, and opens up many new opportunities. Plus there's a dedicated mobile app! Here’s our popular article you may also wish to read for further context: Vision vs. Perspective Shoot Out.

What Does This Mean?

It really comes down to what you want out of your system—and what version of Ignition you are running. If you need to see and interact with screens on mobile devices, you’ll need to use the Perspective module (unless you’re needing to work with an older version of Ignition, then you will have the option to use the Vision Mobile module). At this point, we would suggest that everyone transition to use the Perspective module as it is supported going forward.
